January 2010

First item of discussion in the January meeting was a "thank you" card and video from Seattle Urban Academy. They were able to pay the student's utility and heating bills and purchase "Orca" transportation cards with our last donation. For more information on the Seattle Urban Academy, or to make a donation, please follow the following link to their website: http://www.seattleurbanacademy.org/

The group also received an update on the Jacob's Well project. They will begin the framing on the structures as soon as the weather begins to clear this spring. They are now raising funds for siding, roofing and windows. The group decided to make a donation to Jacob's Well to kick off their "roofing and window" fund. For more information on the Jacob's Well project, or to make a donation, please following the following link to their website: http://buildjacobswell.blogspot.com/

The group also decided to sponsor and join World Concern's "Free Them" 5K walk/run against Human Trafficking. This event will be in May 2011. For more information follow the link: http://www.worldconcern.org/5k/index.htm

December 2010

The Seattle Urban Academy was suggested as a possible destination of a donation. The holiday season is a particularly difficult time for these folks and their needs are very basic. After a brief discussion, it was agreed that a donation to SUA would be appropriate.

Seattle Urban Academy is situated in Seattle's Rainier Valley. SUA is a positive, alternative, Christian, educational community where at-risk high school students develop academic, social, and spiritual maturity to graduate to higher education and sustained employment.

The group also discussed a donation to "The Next Step", a pregnancy services group based in Lynnwood.

Next Step Pregnancy Services Lynnwood is a non-profit agency serving those who face unplanned pregnancies ~ regardless of race, color, creed, religion or marital status. All services are provided free of charge.

It was decided to purchase and donate disposable diapers and diaper wipes to assist them in their work. The diapers and wipes have been delivered and were greatly appreciated by the staff and clients.

November 2010

The November meeting focused on completing the shopping, preparation and final delivery for our annual Thanksgiving basket giveaway.

The shopping was completed during the first snow storm of the year. A big thank you to Jay Halle, our Campbell/Nelson Chaplain, for helping with the final shopping trip. Thanks Jay, we couldn't have handled all of those hams without you!

Our Thanksgiving menu this year: spiral cut ham, pumpkin pie, canned corn and green beans, fruit cocktail, stuffing, potatoes, butter, rolls, sparkling cider, whipped cream topping, peanut butter and turkey gravy.

A big thank you to Clint at the Lynnwood Albertson's for providing 'at cost' food items for our food baskets.

The team met the Monday evening before Thanksgiving and began the building of the food baskets. Everything went smoothly, and before long we were on our way to deliver the baskets to the apartment complex next door to Campbell/Nelson.

The families we delivered to were appreciative of the food baskets and we were all thankful that we were able to help these families during this holiday season.

October 2010

This month's guest speaker was Nancy Tribble from Next Step Pregnancy Services. Their organization provides free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, counseling, maternity clothes and diapers. The have a licensed nurse on staff. They are a pro life organization and 100% donation funded. They have an ongoing need for cash donations, diapers and other basic baby needs.

The Vision House/Jacob's Well dessert event raised $68,000! This is great news as it move them closer to their target amount of $160,000 to get the building started on Jacob's Well.

The recent Seattle Urban Academy guest speaker session was well attended and we believe that we should try for one guest speaker per month.

We will move ahead with the Thanksgiving baskets again this year. Albertson's is on board and will provide 'at cost' supplies for this project.

We decided to hold off on donations this month to stock pile funds for the busy holiday season. There are sure to be multiple causes that need funds during this time.

We also decided on adding two new committee members, who will start attending meetings in November.

Vision House Jacob’s Well fundraiser

On Saturday, October 16th myself, along with others from Campbell Nelson Nissan/Volkswagen family, attended a dessert fundraiser for Vision House Jacob’s Well.

This fundraising event was put on to bring in donations to help build the newest Vision House complex, Jacob’s Well in Shoreline. The event featured guest speakers, dessert and a wonderful performance by the Seattle Children’s Chorus.

The fundraiser brought in donations of $63,837. When added to the other fundraising proceeds, a total of $101,000 has been raised towards the goal of $160,000. These donations are needed to purchase the lumber to build the first phase of the Vision House Jacob’s Well project.

Let’s continue to lend a helping hand. For more information and for volunteering opportunities please visit http://www.vision-house.org/

September 2010

September turned out to be our first 'electronic' meeting!

Busy schedules and a number of committee members with flu bugs made this an easy choice.

The group discussed the Thanksgiving food baskets and it was decided to proceed with this effort. We will establish the cost of the baskets and move forward from there.

The needs of the Seattle Urban Academy was also discussed. They have an immediate need for scientific calculators for their math classes. The committee agreed that this was a good cause to support and we voted to provide a donation for the calculators.
